What is cataphoresis and how does it work?

Cataphoresis belongs between basic and, at the same time, the most up-to-date surface treatments of metals. It can be used both for basic painting and in a combination with other surface treatments.

It is based on the electrophoresis principle with an aqueous solution of the epoxy paint – anolyte, into which a painted object is immersed. This object becomes a cathode in the direct current anolyte, thus attracting the colour cations.

Key features of cataphoresis

Cataphoresis features exquisite anticorrosive properties, high adhesive power and low thickness.

Thanks to that, it is applicable both as basic surface treatment, possibly in a combination with zinc galvanizing, powder coating or painting (for example painting with acrylic paints or water-soluble paints) and as anti-corrosion surface finishing.

Cataphoresis can reach excellent properties when combined with zinc galvanizing or Zn/Ni electroplating andabsolutely superior anti-corrosion protection can be reached by adding powder painting to this combination.

Cataphoresis technological procedure

Chemical degreasing I – chemical degreasing II – 2x cold rinsing – activation – deposition of zinc-phosphate layer - 2x cold rinsing – passivation – cold rinsing – cataphoresic circuit nod - 2x rinsing by the ultra-filtrate – 1 x cold rinsing – blasting by air - baking kiln – cooling.

Other information

Cataphoretic surface treatment can be applied to any electrically conductive object including hot dipped zinc plated surfaces, zinc galvanized materials and aluminum.

Cataphoresis is suitable for painting of both small objects (continuous line in Lakum-KTL Frýdlant nad Ostravicí) and larger and heavier products – with a length up to 3 m and weight up to 550 kg (cyclic line in Lakum-Galma Humpolec).

Due to its productivity, the cataphoresis surface treatment is advisable for manufacture of parts in large series.
